4 Benefits of Thermostat Upgrades

Smart thermostats have the same benefits as programmable thermostats, with even more controllability enabling further convenience and money and energy savings. They are designed to adjust HVAC schedules to improvise using local sensors, software algorithms, and occupancy sensors. This means that based on your preferred temperature settings, soon, the thermostat will begin adjusting your settings using incremental amounts to save energy while maintaining a comfortable temperature.

1.) KEEP TRACK OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Digital thermostats enable customers to keep a detailed account of their energy consumption. The thermostat also allows you to build a home energy profile that details how your energy usage changes over any given period and, depending on your habits, manage your home’s climate to save additional money.

2.) SAVINGS ON ENERGY COSTS

Experts say 51% of the annual energy usage from the average American household goes to heating and cooling, which comes to more than $900 per year. With a smart thermostat, you can save up to around 8% of heating and cooling bills. This goes nicely with relative rebates and cash back offers on qualifying smart thermostats.

3.) Remote Control

One of the coolest features of today’s smart thermostats is the ability to adjust the temperature remotely from your smartphone. Many of these smart thermostats also send alerts to notify you when your home’s temperature falls below or rises above the limits you’ve set. The thermostat monitors and tracks your movement patterns to predict when you’ll be home, and they track weather conditions to adjust accordingly.

4.) LOWER ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Smart thermostats have entirely changed how we approach heating and cooling our homes – they use advanced technology to reach a desired temperature with lower energy consumption. These systems not only give users the ability to control their temperatures remotely but also the ability to adjust temperatures depending on occupancy and schedule. With smart thermostats, homeowners can optimize their heating and cooling costs based on usage, making them a wise long-term investment.

Contrary to popular belief, the air within our homes and workplaces can contain harmful pollutants. Substances like lead, fire retardants, asbestos, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, radon, mold, and volatile chemicals from cleaning products are often present. These pollutants can negatively impact our health, energy levels, mood, and well-being.

Modern homes are designed to be airtight for energy efficiency purposes, which traps pollutants indoors. Q: What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy). This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm). The diameter specification of 0.3 microns corresponds to the worst case; the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Particles that are larger or smaller are trapped with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in the worst case efficiency rating (i.e. 99.97% or better for all particle sizes). (Source)

Q: What are the most common causes of IAQ problems?

The most common causes of IAQ problems in buildings are:

  • Not enough ventilation, lack of fresh outdoor air or contaminated air being brought into the building
  • Poor upkeep of ventilation, heating and air-conditioning systems, and
  • Dampness and moisture damage due to leaks, flooding or high humidity
  • Occupant activities, such as construction or remodeling
  • Indoor and outdoor contaminated air

Q: Is there a test that can find an IAQ problem?

There is no single test to find an IAQ problem. Your employer should check measurements of temperature, humidity and air flow. In addition, inspection and testing of the ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems (to make sure it is working according to specifications for building use and occupancy) should be performed. A building walk-through to check for odors and look for water damage, leaks, dirt or pest droppings may be helpful. Leaks need to be eliminated. Standing water in humidifiers, air conditioning units, on roofs and in boiler pans can become contaminated with bacteria or fungi and need to be eliminated, also. Specific testing for radon or asbestos may be required in some circumstances as part of building occupancy. For instance, in schools, asbestos must be checked every three years and re-inspected every 6 months (under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act-AHERA).
